Earlier this month we received some stunning photos from our implementation partners in Nepal, the Bodhi Tree Foundation. Through our partnership, this year we were able to reach 729 pregnant and lactating women with prenatal vitamins in the district of Humla, Nepal, an area so remote that the nearest road is a ten day walk.
According to UNESCO, Humla is the highest, most remote and most northerly region of Nepal. Life for the Humli people is challenging, with the agricultural season being short and the winters long and severe. Particularly for the women in the remote Humla, Nepal, nutritious foods and health care is costly and out of reach. UNICEF estimates that the adjusted maternal mortality ratio is 830 deaths per 100,000 live births, a strong contrast to the 11 to 100,000 ratio reported for the US in 2005.
We are delighted to have provided so many new and expecting mothers with the essential nutrition they need this year, and hope to expand our reach within and beyond Nepal even more so next year with your help.
