Our goal for 2010 is to provide critical nutritional support to 20 million children at a cost of under $.20 per child.
At Vitamin Angels we realize that we are stewards of the donations that we receive. We take this stewardship very seriously. We understand that the sophisticated donor relies on our past performance and future promises. Our financial performance must indicate that we have spent your funds wisely and effectively. This means the vast majority of your funds must be spent on field programs that effectively support the mission of Vitamin Angels. In addition there must be a significant return on every dollar invested in the fundraising and administrative arenas.
All of our financial information is easily accessible to the public. It is audited by an outside reputable accounting firm, utilizes industry standards in valuing product donations, and is rated by industry watch dog groups. Here we have included copies of our audited financial statements from 2005-2007 and a letter from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator is the most respected evaluator of non-profits in the U.S. They have awarded Vitamin Angels their highest rating of four stars. Our 2008 audited financial performance will be posted as soon as it is available.
In 2007, Vitamin Angels generated total revenues in excess of $45 million. Approximately 99% of all expenditures were dedicated to programs throughout the world. The remaining 1% was dedicated to fundraising and administrative activities.
In 2007, Vitamin Angels generated cash donations of approximately $1 million. Of these cash donations approximately $400,000 was spent in fundraising and administrative activities to leverage product donations of $44 million. Therefore there was a 100 to 1 return on those investments. Due to the large donations of deworming medicine in 2006 and 2007 our revenues were higher than anticipated and this trend did not continue into 2008. Therefore our revenue and leverage ratios decreased in 2008.
These metrics are important, however, they are not the only ones we use to chart our success. We measure the number of children and families served and our cost to reach them. In 2008, we provided vital nutrition to 7.5 million children throughout the world. We spent $1.3 million in program support, fundraising and administrative areas. This translates to a cost of less than $.20 per child.
At Vitamin Angels we realize that we can be most effective by keeping our costs within accepted industry benchmarks and by reaching increased numbers of children each year. We will keep our fundraising and administrative costs below industry benchmarks, and with your continued support be a force in reducing child mortality and morbidity worldwide.
