ING NYC Marathon 2010

I'll be running the ING NYC Marathon on November 7, 2010.  While I look forward to completing a personal goal, I'm also thrilled to be able to help reduce global malnutrition along the way by raising funds for Vitamin Angels, an extraordinary and inspiring organization.

Why Vitamin Angels?

In recent years, I've become interested in nutrition and nutrition-related issues, and, as a result, I discovered Vitamin Angels.

Vitamin Angels works to reduce child mortality worldwide by providing essential micronutrients, especially vitamin A, zinc, and iodine, to expecting mothers, infants, and children.

New York Times Op-Ed columnist Nicholas Kristof has called micronutrient deficiency the "hidden hunger." Children who are micronutrient deficient do not develop proper immune systems, leaving them more susceptible to disease and overall mortality. Essential micronutrients enable young immune systems to fight infectious diseases, helping children attain good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful and productive lives.

What's more, micronutrient supplementation has received the support and attention of top global health experts and organizations, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Copenhagen Consensus. The 2008 Copenhagen Consensus, a panel of world class economists, analyzed cost-effective solutions to the world’s ten biggest challenges. They ranked micronutrient supplementation for children as the #1 global priority. The report notes that providing micronutrient supplements for 80% of the 140 million children who lack essential vitamins would cost just $60 million per year and would yield annual benefits of more than $1 billion.

The dramatic impact and cost-efficiency of these programs has made me an avid supporter of Vitamin Angels and similar organizations.

Thank You!

I know that all of you support multiple causes, but I hope you'll be able to contribute to this important cause.  As the statistics show, no contribution is too small, and anything you can give will make an impact.

Thanks very much in advance for your support, and I'll see you on the other side of 26.2!

Together with health advocates worldwide, distribution of vitamin A has helped reduce the number of child deaths to less than 10 million annually for the first time on record.
A panel of world-class economists assembled by the Copenhagen Consensus ranked micronutrient supplementation ranked as the #1 global priority.
Research indicates that each dollar spent on supplementation creates benefits worth more than 17 dollars. Better health, fewer deaths and increased future earnings add up to benefits of more than $1 billion yearly.
Nutrient-rich foods are often expensive or difficult to obtain in developing countries. Multivitamins provide daily recommended amounts of key vitamins and minerals important for a range of functions essential to good health.
Over two billion people worldwide are deficient in essential nutrients. New and expecting mothers and children under five are the groups most vulnerable to vitamin deficiencies.
Vitamin A is essential to immune function, especially in children under five who are most vulnerable to common infections and diseases.
Our Operation 20/20 program reaches infants, children, and lactating women in 32 countries on three continents.
It only takes 25 cents to provide a child with vitamin A and antiparasitics for a year. With one dollar, we can provide a child with vitamin A during the four most vulnerable years of their life.
In 2009, Vitamin Angels provided over 10 million children with essential nutrients. This year, with your help, we will double our reach to 20 million children.
Vitamin Angels' Thrive to Five program provides multivitamins for children and pregnant and lactating women in the U.S. and abroad.

Essential nutrients, healthy children.

One in three children worldwide is undernourished. Vitamin Angels reduces child mortality by connecting infants and children under five with vital nutrients.
