Dear Friends,

Sometimes the news hits close to home. Last week during our operations meeting, Jeff Markel, our Senior VP for Corporate Relations, let us know that the weekend’s headline about 10 aid workers killed in Afghanistan, had a direct connection to Vitamin Angels. Jeff had met Tom Grams, one of the people who had been killed, a couple of years ago during a presentation on poverty around the world. At the end of that meeting, Jeff had introduced himself and spoke with Tom about Vitamin Angels’ work. Tom had been working with a number of international aid groups since 2001, bringing dental health to the children in the most remote villages. This was Tom’s 8th trip to Afghanistan. One of the groups Tom worked with in Myanmar was a recipient Vitamin Angels’ vitamins.

In the article, we also noticed that one of the people, Glen Lapp, was associated with the Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pennsylvania. I immediately called, Claude Good from Franconia Mennonite Conference, who has been supplying Vitamin Angels with millions of antiparasitics for years now. I was sad to hear that Glen had been a friend of the family. So tragic.

Poverty, power and politics often conspire to make aid workers easy targets in developing countries. Earlier this year while we were doing distributions in Guatemala, we had to have armed guards patrolling the make shift clinic we had set up to protect the doctors we were working with. You would hope that by doing this work we would be immune to these attacks, yet we know this is often not the case.

In the midst of these potentially dangerous situations, I sometimes question working in these environments. And then a child will come up to me and hold my hand, or look me in the eyes to say 'thank you' and I am reminded once again why we do this work. I hope Tom and Glen were able to experience many of the rewards that make doing this work so worthwhile.

Upwards!

The Effect of Infectious Disease on Brain Development
In July, researchers at the University of New Mexico proposed a new explanation behind varied overall intelligence averages from country to country – the effect of infectious disease. Christopher Epigg and his colleagues explain that that the brains of newly born children require 87% of those children’s metabolic energy (44% for five-year olds). "Any competition for this energy is likely to damage the brain’s development, and parasites and pathogens compete for it in several ways". Read More >>
In India - Considering Whether Food Should Be A Constitutional Right
Despite India’s economic growth over the past decade, the country continues to be compared with Africa in poverty surveys. A recent study reported that India’s poorest states have more people in poverty than Africa’s poorest nations. Hunger indexes are dismal, with 42 percent of all Indian children under age five underweight. Read More >>
