Reaching newborns in Nepal
The Bodhi Tree Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting community based programs that focus on maternal and child health in the remote district of Humla, Nepal. Vitamin Angels teamed up with the Bohdi Tree Foundation and their trained local workers to reach 729 pregnant and lactating women with prenatal vitamins in the villages of Tehe, Durpa, Ripa, Yalbang and Mucchu.

Vitamin Angels expands its reach in Haiti
Vitamin Angels recently received an update from Fonkoze, a microfinance organization in Haiti. Fonkoze believes that to truly help women and their families overcome poverty there must be access to vital health care medications, services and also education. Having received 685,000 multivitamins for distribution they were able to reach over 13,000 children ages 2 to 12 who were at a great risk of micronutrient malnutrition. With 40 branch offices throughout Haiti, Fonkoze works to ensure that children in the most remote regions are receiving essential nutrients as well as education about nutrition.

EMC Fundraises for Vitamin Angels
Usana Health Sciences Independent AssociateOur friends at EMC, an international technology company providing innovative ways to store, protect, optimize and leverage information, are getting into the giving spirit with angel wings, halos and our snazzy black Vitamin Angels t-shirts! After a few employees learned of our cause, they championed a program in the Western region to raise funds for Vitamin Angels and help us continue to reach those children most in need of essential nutrients. This fall EMC employees collected donations in jars placed all over the campus, raising about $4,000 and making a big difference in the lives of 16,000 children. Thanks EMC!
Usana Health Sciences Independent AssociateBake Sale for Vitamin Angels
What better way to spread holiday cheer than a tasty cookie bake sale to support Vitamin Angels! After a school project on non-profit organizations, Aidan and his friend Ben were inspired to do more. They decided to hold a bake sale in their local town on Bainbridge Island and raised enough money to reach 400 children with vital nutrients! What a delectable way to get involved, great work!

Dear Friends,

As we race into the holiday season, I like to remember that one of the major holidays that will be celebrated soon, Christmas, is really about the birth of a baby. In most of the industrialized world, the birth of a baby is a time of tremendous joy and celebration. But in most of the developing world, in the areas where Vitamin Angels is working, the birth of a baby is a time of tremendous fear and anxiety, as the family members worry about the survival of the mother and baby. In fact the average lifetime risk of a woman in a developing country dying from complications of pregnancy or childbirth is 300 times greater than that of a woman in the industrialized world!

In October, while visiting a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, I learned that they are still losing 2-3 babies every day. Earlier this year in Kenya, I was confronted with the same reality. Hospitals, which are actually very sophisticated, are still losing 1-2 babies daily largely due to the chronic malnutrition of the women they are serving.

This year Vitamin Angels has dramatically expanded the reach of our prenatal vitamin program ( part of Thrive to Five ) around the world and here in the United States. We are now distributing over 62,397,183 prenatal tablets (thank you Rainbow Light, Andrew Lessman and ProCaps Labs!) to pregnant women all over the world. We are committed to the belief that every woman has a right to essential prenatal nutrients.

This holiday season we are celebrating healthy babies all over the world! Happy Holidays!
.
Upwards!
Howard Schiffer, President

How much is spent on malnutrition and is it enough ?
In November, Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) published the report “Malnutrition: How much is being spent?” which analyzes nutrition funding flows from 2004-2007. The report investigates the amount of aid that is being spent on nutrition yearly, comparing that number with the amount that is needed to make real, significant strides against childhood malnutrition as outlined by the Millennium Development Goals. Angels' United Holiday Party
Tis' the season for holiday parties! We would like to extend our gratitude to board member Scott Holmes, event host United Future, and the wonderful event sponsors for holding a fabulous holiday fundraiser for Vitamin Angels earlier this month. The exciting evening held at the eco-friendly Marrakesh House in Los Angeles, featured live belly dancers, delicious treats from Celebrity Chef J, great music from DJ El Dopa, a silent auction and of course some outstanding donations to help Vitamin Angels reach children around the world with vital nutrients.
