 Help us reach 1,000,000 children in need in India!
On February 25th, Vitamin Angels’ Founder, Howard Schiffer will be heading off to India to view vitamin A distributions conducted by some of our in country partners and reach 7,200 of the one million beneficiary children we will reach in India in 2010. He will be traveling across the country (check out the map!) and seeing the work our partners do day in and day out to reach the children no one else is reaching and who are most in need of supplementation.
With your help we can raise the $250,000 needed to cover our programs costs in India and reach every one of these deserving children with vitamin A, for the entire year. Together we can prevent vitamin A deficiency childhood blindness and reduce under-five child mortality by 23%. And it only costs $.25 per child per year!
We will be bringing you the stories of some of the special children Howard meets along the way, and showing you his daily progress as he travels around the country. The Haitian Earthquake – One Month On
 Last month, Vitamin Angels responded to an urgent request from our in-country partner, Hope for Haiti after the devastating earthquake in Haiti by shipping over 1 million children’s multivitamins. Since then, we have continued to maintain our commitment to rebuilding nutritional security in Haiti by focusing on long-term strategies for alleviating micronutrient deficiency. This month, Vitamin Angels directed generous donations of multivitamins and other support from our partners at Pharmavite, Rainbow Light, and NHK Laboratories, to our in country partners to further assist in the immediate recovery efforts and continue to sustain our existing projects.

Some Late Holiday Inspiration
Even though the holiday season is behind us, we want to aknowledge those groups that made the best of the giving season by holding a fundraiser for Vitamin Angels!
 Bethlehem Early Learning Center
Every year the preschoolers at Bethlehem Early Learning Center share the holiday season with other children in need around the world. This year they chose to dedicate their fundraising to Vitamin Angels. The kids collected change in their decorated vitamin bottles and raised enough funds to reach 2,800 children! Great work!
East Greenwich Methodist Church
 With the help of long time Vitamin Angels supporter Rick Antonelli, the East Greenwich Methodist Church raised enough funds to provide 1,200 children with essential nutrients. Everyone in the congregation showed their support, even the children, who were encouraged to donate any change they could and in return would receive a Vitamin Angels ornamnet to hang on the tree. By the end of the fundraiser the church Christmas tree was covered with Vitamin Angels. |

 Dear Friends,
We will be leaving for India at the end of the month. Even with India’s booming economy, it is important to know that India still has the highest numbers of vitamin A deficient (VAD) children in the world (in fact 37% of the VAD in the world is in India!). Vitamin A deficiency not only leads to childhood blindness but also to increased morbidity and mortality. We are now reaching 1 million children and mothers in India and we are looking for a new country sponsor for our program there, for more information please contact Cami Allen in our Program Division (805 564 8400). We invite you to follow my journey through India to meet the wonderful beneficiaries our work is truly all about.
Our goal for 2010 is to almost double the number of recipients we are reaching to over 20 million children (we reached 11,057,289 children in 2009). We will need your conituned support to achieve our goal. Our intention is to again double our reach in 2011! To do this, we will need an additional 64 million high dose vitamin A, along with 60 million children’s multiples, 60 million prenatal vitamins, and 30 million Albendazole. "A healthy diet is more than just calories."
Last month SciDev.net released an article revealing a common oversight in the way we view and talk about undernutrition. Though the word "hunger" is often used as an emotive term to "conjure images of famine and starvation in the developing world," the dietary problems that plague more than one third of the world’s children are more complex than just a lack of calories. While high-calorie staple foods – like maize and rice - may fill the belly, necessities like protein and micronutrients are missing from many diets. As the author Priya Shetty explains, people “can survive [on these foods], but cannot flourish."

The Honduras Children’s Micronutrient
and Deworming Project
Sight and Life Magazine published an article last month which takes a look at Vitamin Angels’ own multiple micronutrient and deworming project in Honduras. The project is part of VA’s Thrive to Five multivitamin program, implemented with field partner Cristo Salva and supported by Sight and Life. Designed as part of a larger Honduran Ministry of Health (MOH) rural health program, the project was the first stage of a two-stage effort to alleviate malnutrition in the region. Read More |
