UNFI Volunteers Help Prepare
Vitamin A For Shipment
Our program manager, Amy Steets, recently returned from a trip to the John S James warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia where she met with four UNFI volunteers who came together to box up 32,000 bottles of vitamin A for shipment. The boxes will go to support our projects in Honduras and the Dominican Republic where UNFI and our field partners Batey Relief Alliance are helping us reach 55,000 children through Operation 20/20.

Vitamin World
From October to December 2010, Vitamin World held their ‘Be An Angel’ campaign and raised over $400,000 to support Vitamin Angels programs in the US and around the world.
All 450 Vitamin World retail stores participated including locations in the U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico. Stores raised funds through the sale of reusable Vitamin World & Vitamin Angels tote bags as well as dollar donations from customers. In addition, Vitamin World donated 3.1 million children's chewable vitamins during the campaign, which will go a long way toward improving the health and well being of children most in need.
Over the past year, through Vitamin World’s tremendous support we are reaching over 2 million children!! (See our Special Thanks section below for even more about Vitamin World’s contributions!) |

Dear Friends,
I am beginning to think I live on airplanes. After having just returned from a (literal) round-the-world trip to launch major country-wide promotions in Australia with Sanofi’s Nature’s Own brand and Italy with Pfizer’s Multicentrum Jr. line, I hopped back on a flight to open Banner Pharmacaps’ Global Marketing conference in High Point, North Carolina last week. Did you realize that Banner is one of the largest producers of vitamin A capsules in the world?! We’re thrilled to see Vitamin Angels expanding in the international market.
I’m already off again, to meet our field partners and some of the nearly 25,000 children receiving multivitamins through our project in Laos. This is an incredible project in the Plain of Jars region, and I’ll be tweeting about our work from the road. You can stay updated on my progress and see new photos and read Notes from the Field on our Laos Travel Page. From Laos, I will fly directly to Virgo’s ‘Focus on the Future’ event in Scottsdale, where I hope to see many of you!
In March, the Vitamin Angels team will be heading down to Anaheim for Expo West. Make sure to get your tickets now for the opening event of Expo West, Vitamin Angels’ League of Angels on March 10th at (where else?) Angel Stadium. We are expecting a sold out event, so get your tickets early and join 300 of the key decision makers in the industry for an inspiring evening.
I also wanted to let you know that because of the recent political unrest in Cote d’Ivoire, we are moving our previously scheduled trip back a few months and working instead on a trip to Kenya. Kenya is an incredible country and our partners there have some of the most comprehensive programs in the world. In fact, we recently received wonderful news from our friends at Millennium Villages (MV) in Kenya. Nearly 350,000 tablets of zinc, generously donated by Novus, were received by health teams in Sauri, Western Kenya and Dertu, Northern Kenya. Through MV and our colleagues in Eldoret, at the Riley Mother and Baby Hospital and World Vision in Afghanistan, the zinc will reach babies and young children with severe diarrhea. According to the WHO and UNICEF, widespread use of oral rehydration salts in conjunction with zinc can prevent up to 88% of deaths from diarrhea.
Upwards! (literally)

"Reproductive health, and child health and nutrition in India: meeting the challenge"
A recent Lancet report underscores the importance of Vitamin Angels' work in India. "With 1.8 million deaths among children (age < 5 years) and 68,000 deaths among mothers every year, India's burden of reproductive health, and child health and nutrition is greater than that in any other country." Compared with other countries in Asia, India has made slow progress in child health and is falling short on national and Millennium Development targets.
The report attributes this to "weak health systems; substantial inadequacies exist in planning, financing, human resources, infrastructure, supply systems, governance, and monitoring."

High malnutrition rates in Kenya despite improvements in food security
According to IRIN News, Global Acute Malnutrition levels in Kenya are above the 15 percent emergency threshold established by the UN World Health Organization. The news comes despite recent rains that increased productivity and in turn had a positive effect on the local economy. Unfortunately, the Kenya Food Security Outlook reports that "Improvements in household food security have not translated into a decisive reduction in rates of child malnutrition in the northeastern districts."
Enrico Eminae, ActionAid Kenya northeast region coordinator, blames lack of education and limited sources of income. Eminae explains that "Due to the high illiteracy levels that characterize this region, most people, especially women, [do not] ensure that children receive a balanced diet. This makes malnutrition a [common] occurrence."

We would like to give a huge thank you to Vitamin World/NBTY for donating the graphic design work to create our new Guidelines for Administration of Vitamin A Supplementation [PDF]. We will be sending out a copy of the manual (all 56 pages!) to all of our distribution partners in order to provide clear, concise and detailed instructions on how to organize effective distributions of vitamin A. Also included are specific training tools for distribution supervisors.
This document and other useful tools can be found on our Implement Your Project Page. |
