Haiti Update
Vitamin Angels has received quite a number of inquiries regarding the recent earthquake in Haiti. While not a disaster relief agency, Vitamin Angels has responded to an urgent request from our in-country partner, Hope for Haiti, by shipping over 1 million children’s multivitamins. After the present crisis is averted, Vitamin Angels will be working to rebuild nutritional security in Haiti by focusing on long-term strategies for alleviating micronutrient deficiency. To learn more about our response, please read our press release

Vitamin Angels is working with Love a Child in Haiti to distribute vitamin A and albendazole to at-risk children. Love a Child has many outreach programs including 14 schools and food distribution programs that feed thousands of Haitian families. Through the help of the Love a Child staff we are reaching 1,000 infants from 6-11 months of age and 3,250 children under 5 years of age with vitamin A and albendazole to help their young immune systems ward off simple infections and disease so they can grow healthy and strong.

Vitamin Angels is reaching at-risk children in Ethiopia with multivitamins through our partners at The African Services Committee. The organization is committed to expanding HIV prevention and access to AIDS treatment. With three HIV clinics in Ethiopia, the African Services Committee helps support the individuals, families and communities most impacted by AIDS, with a special focus on outreach to the underserved. Through HIV testing and care centers set up in urban markets, Vitamin Angels is reaching 1,057 children living in Shola Market, Kombolcha and Mekelle.

Developing Countries, Developing Minds
This year the third grade class at The River School in Washington DC chose the theme ‘developing countries’ to integrate into their class curriculam. Two young students, Ryan and Nicholas picked Haiti as their country, and after researching the Haitian culture, traditions and ways of life they began looking for an organization supporting the people of Haiti. They found Vitamin Angels.

Students baked up hundreds of tasty treats which they sold to their local community to raise money for the non-profits related to their chosen developing countries. Ryan and Nicholas raised $89.25 to provide vital nutrients to 357 people living in Haiti. Great work!

Dear Friends,

In the song “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway show Rent, they talk about the 525,600 minutes in a year and ask the question, 'How do you measure a year?' For Vitamin Angels, our measurement is pretty simple, it is the number of kids we’re reaching. Last year in 2009, Vitamin Angels reached 11,057, 289 children. That equals twenty-one children every minute, for every day of every month of the year. Not bad. Operation 20/20 is now operating in 32 countries. Thrive to Five now has distributions going on in 50 cities in the United States and in 28 countries around the world. We distributed 764,000 bottles of prenatal vitamins this past year. We’ve been busy!

We ended 2009 with a great interview on FOX 11’s ‘Good Day LA’. Immediately following the interview the co-anchor even gave me a generous personal donation! In fact everyone at the Fox 11, from the production crew, to the news staff was raving about Vitamin Angels and offering to help get the word out on our work.

We started 2010 with two nice shout outs from Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times! I met Nicholas when he was in Santa Barbara in October and he was really supportive of Vitamin Angels’ work. His new book, Half the Sky (highly recommended), is a terrific endorsement for the wonderful work small organizations are accomplishing to help change the lives of girls and women around the world.

Bob Dylan’s early movie reminded us, Don’t Look Back, and as we look forward to 2010, we are now confident that Vitamin Angels will be able to exceed our original projection of 15 million children and actually reach 20 million children this year. Furthermore with the right support, we are now in a position to double our reach each year for the next few years.

On behalf of the 11,057,289 children we reached in 2009 and the 20 million children we will be reaching this year, we thank you, your support means everything.

Upwards!

Neural tube birth defects on rise in Utah
Thousands of Utah women are getting free bottles of multivitamins in the hopes that none of their future children will develop deadly but preventable neural tube defects.

The 26,000 bottles of vitamins, paid for by a federal grant and through a private donation by the group Vitamin Angels, contain 400 micrograms of folic acid. The B vitamin helps a fetal neural tube properly develop into the brain and spinal cord, according to the March of Dimes.

While the importance of folic acid was common knowledge a few years ago, fewer women know it now, according to the Utah Department of Health.

"We have a new cohort of women coming into this group every year ... who haven't heard this message," said Amy Nance, the Utah Birth Defect Network at the Health Department. Read More
The impact of culture on child nutrition
IRIN released an article last month depicting the challenges that culture can present in delivering vital nutrition to children. The article focused on the issues presented by culture in Kenya, in particular, though noted that other cultural norms may similarly influence child health around the world. As Kenyans face month after month of drought, many children are suffering from malnutrition and are being enrolled in supplementary feeding programs. The article, “The role of culture in child nutrition,” depicts some of the challenges that must be overcome to allow these children to obtain the nutrition they need to be healthy. Read More
