Vitamin Angels in Haiti
Vitamin Angels is working with several partners in Haiti to provide essential nutrients to children and mothers in need. Recently, Vitamin Angels sent almost 700,000 children’s chewable multivitamins to Fondasyon Kole Zepol (Fonkoze). Fonkoze, which is dedicated to building the economic foundations for democracy in Haiti, is distributing the vitamins throughout the country as part of its health initiative. The organization has created a 4 tiered process to address some of the core causes of poverty. They offer a range of services to meet the needs of those at various stages of need, from basic support and health services, to training programs and microcredit loans.

Friends of Humanity in Afghanistan
Vitamin Angels is pleased to partner with Friends of Humanity, an organization dedicated to fighting poverty, injustice, and disease in Afghanistan through public health education, community dialogue programs, and clinical treatment services. We recently provided vitamin A and antiparasitics for 1,000 children in orphanages and schools, including the Kufa Orphanage and the Skateistan School in Kabul. Friends of Humanity, a great match for Vitamin Angels, directs their services towards the underserved by focusing on vulnerable and internally displaced populations, specifically women and children. FHO operates out of clinical service facilities located in Kabul and Jalalabad where the effects of poor nutrition are seen in the women and children they serve. In a recent Partner Perspective interview, the director of FHO, Asheesh Bhalla, puts to rest the belief that providing aid to developing countries perpetuates their dependence on foreign aid saying: "targeted public health interventions are important to helping these marginalized groups reach an adequate living standard. Providing children with health services actually ensures that they will grow up to be more productive and educated members of society and therefore be less reliant on foreign aid in the long-term."

Vitamin Shoppe
The Vitamin Shoppe has been a wonderful supporter of ours since 2007. The company and its many employees, have proven over and over again their passion for our cause through a variety of awareness and fundraising initiatives including painting a custom designed Vitamin Angels mural on the side of one of their stores in NYC, in-store point of sale campaigns, shopping tote sales, blue jean Fridays, employee raffles and more. CEO, Tom Tolworthy even accompanied Howard on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic to see our work firsthand! Of the relationship with Vitamin Angels, Tolworthy said "the results of our partnership are transcended only by the indelible footprint left on the soul of our company." Our many thanks to the Vitamin Shoppe for their continued support and ingenuity, we can’t wait to see what you do next!

You Tube and Social Vibe
Vitamin Angels and SocialVibe have teamed up with YouTube star Andrew Bravener to raise $5,000 to send essential multivitamins to preschool children in Laos. Andrew learned about Vitamin Angels’ work when he flipped over his Jones Soda cap to read “you just saved a child from going blind.” His delight at this unexpected finding resulted in the humorous "Happy Drink" video last year.

Recently, Andrew made a video encouraging his over 41,000 subscribers to sign up on SocialVibe, a site which lets you raise money for charities just by picking a sponsor and placing a badge on your Facebook and other social networking pages. On top of funds raised from sponsors, SocialVibe will be giving 25 cents to Vitamin Angels for every new subscriber that signs up through August 10th! The best part - it’s free! Just sign up and start raising money today! Watch Andrew's video!
Howard attends a meeting with the Worm Project
parasites (intestinal worms) can consume 30% of what a child eats every day. This is the reason why antiparasitics have become part of Operation 20/20 and why the Worm Project has been such an important ally of Vitamin Angels’. The Worm Project is a group of organizations dedicated to combating world hunger through parasite elimination. In June, Howard met with Claude Goode and the Worm Warriors in Franconia, Pennsylvania. The group recommitted to reaching millions of children in 2010 and also understands the importance of delivering micronutrient supplements in conjunction with worm interventions.

Dear Friends,

4 Stars from Charity Navigator! We are pleased to announce that Vitamin Angels has just received another 4 Star rating (the highest rating) from Charity Navigator – we are now batting 100% for the 2 years we’ve been rated and are proud to be in an elite group of charities to receive consecutive 4 star ratings (only 19% of the charities they rate have done this)! Charity Navigator, the country’s largest independent charity evaluator, is recognizing Vitamin Angels for sound fiscal management and in acknowledgment that for 15 years over 95% of our donations have gone directly to our programs.

At Monday’s Operations Meeting, our Program Division announced that we had sent full pallet shipments out last week to Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Haiti. Vitamin Angels is also now operating in 24 states in the United States offering free prenatal vitamins and free children’s multiples through our Thrive to Five Campaign. I only wish you could see all of the incredible photos we receive from around the world of all the children we are helping. Keep checking in on our website as we continue to update our photo library!

Last Friday, Michael Franti did a show in honor of Vitamin Angels at the Lowell Summer Music Series (LSMS) in Lowell, Massachusetts. Jessamyn Wead, in our office was really the inspiration for making this happen. After Michael's 'Yell Fire' cd, Jess (a committed Franti fan) got inspired to put together a package with 'Yell Vitamins' on the cover and sent it to Michael. I thought the idea was so great, I sent it to our good friend Rick Antonelli, who aside from many other activities (and being an avid Vitamin Angels' supporter), knows Peter Aucella, who runs the LSMS. Rick immediately called me back and assured me we were going to have a Michael Franti / Vitamin Angels concert and party this summer. Jessamyn of course is bouncing off the walls having gotten to see and hang out with Michael.. Just shows you - you have to dream big!

Have you checked out our new website? It is incredible. Send kudos to Cami Allen, Kim Saam, Kevin Breedlove at Breedlove Creative, and the entire Vitamin Angels team – they all worked together to create a new world class website for Vitamin Angels!

Best,
Howard Schiffer, President
Neonatal and Maternal Health in
Latin America and the Caribbean
Save the Children, in accordance with UNICEF and other leaders in health, published a report early this year titled “Reducing Neonatal Mortality and Morbidity in Latin America and The Caribbean.” The report explains that while infant mortality rates have been decreasing in the region, neonatal mortality rates have shown almost no decline in the past ten years. The report claims that the lack of progress is due to a lack of programs which specifically target neonates.
