Dear Friends,
I'm on a plane as I write this, traveling the leg between London and Seattle as I return from Kenya. I'm heading to Seattle to give a speech at the Univera Annual Convention. When I stand up to speak tomorrow, I'll begin my speech by saying that even though agreeing to this speaking engagement meant adding an additional fifteen thousand miles onto an already busy schedule, I do it because I've promised the children three things: (1) You're worth it, (2) I'll be your voice – I'll let people know the conditions you are facing every day and (3) I won't forget you.
Having just spent the past eleven days in Kenya, the third promise is easy. In fact I can't forget them or their mothers, or the way we were welcomed into every village with song and dance and so much joy. I can't forget how much it meant to these children, men and women that "the visitors" (as they called us) cared enough to show up. I told everyone over and over again about how many people Vitamin Angels works with all over the world, who care about them and just want their families and children to be healthy.
When I told those we met that I would work to get children's multivitamins for their children, applause instantly erupted around us. These are the moms, babies and children that Vitamin Angels has in mind when we tell you that we want to reach 40 million children next year. People sometimes tell me I'm being unreasonable by continuing to expand Vitamin Angels' reach so dramatically. And my response is always, "We have to be unreasonable. If we don't speak out for these children and babies, who will?"
Recently the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that child mortality has continued to decline globally.
But there is still a lot of work to do. Even though the global trends are promising, they are not consistent across the globe. In fact, in some regions (parts of Africa and Asia, for example) the numbers of underweight children have increased. The call is clear; now is the time we need to increase our efforts!
It is easy to get lost in the numbers and Vitamin Angels always wants to bring the focus back to the children. The women we visited in Western Kenya told me that the price of corn has risen from 60 shillings to 120 shillings per kilo (75¢ - $1.50) in the past six months. For many of them, this means their families get by on one meal per day during parts of the year. This is why the vitamins are so important. This is why their impact is so significant. Again and again women would report these "miracle" stories after taking the vitamins; increased appetite, no longer craving to eat soil, lots of energy, being strong enough to work in the garden, and no longer being sick all the time. And we would listen and say, "Yes, this is the way the human body is supposed to be when it is healthy."
When I'm in the field, I keep thinking of how much I want you all to meet these children, moms and babies. I want you to see the smiles on their faces and feel the joy in their hearts. I want you to be there when a mom hands over her healthy baby to you and looks you in the eye and says, "Thank you."
The only thing we were asked for in village after village was to, "Please, keep bringing us these vitamins." We assured them we would.
Upwards!
PS. We look forward to seeing you all at our Summit of Angels event at the NBJ Summit, coming up on July 19th, 2011 at the St. Regis Hotel in Dana Point. We promise you an incredible evening at the industry's premier networking event.

WHO- World Health Statistics on global Health
The World Health Statistics, released by the World Health Organization, sheds light into global health and progress made towards achieving health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). According to the report, "Annual global deaths of children under five years of age fell to 8.1 million in 2009 from 12.4 million in 1990." However, levels of mortality remain astonishingly high in certain areas of the world, therefore "Much more needs to be done to achieve the target of a two-thirds reduction in the 1990 mortality levels by the year 2015."
