Multivitamins for Cambodian Children
Crown Worldwide Group recently opened up its second school in a farming area of southeastern Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The school will serve some 3,000 children. The unique school integrates children orphaned by AIDS as well as approximately 100 HIV positive children, who are normally excluded from traditional schools.
Crown’s relationship with Vitamin Angels, as one of our long-time shipping partners, made for a great fit in providing children’s multivitamins to these at-risk children.
The children are part of the Little Sprouts and Little Folks programs run by the Maryknoll Mission. The Maryknoll Mission is committed to helping children obtain an education and build a sustainable life by offering financial support for school uniforms, supplies and other necessities. Their project helps children with who are HIV positive receive essential antiretroviral medication and find a foster home and provides mentoring and even offered basic computer instruction for many of its students.

News from Haiti
Vitamin Angels continues to direct micronutrient supplements to Haiti in an ongoing effort to rebuild nutritional security. We recently granted sufficient vitamin A and albendazole to reach 35,000 children to the Penn State University College of Medicine, Global Health program. The university program is working with the regional health director in Pestel, Haiti Dr. Seneque, who is the only physician in the area, along with a group of Haitian community health workers. The supplements are distributed with health education. So far the turnout has been good and health workers foresee even more community buy-in as tangible results of the supplementation and education are seen.

Vitamin Angels’ partner, ProCaps Laboratories, is not only committed to improving the health of pregnant women and their newborn babies but is also a true example of collaboration. Bringing together raw material suppliers, bottle manufacturers and label printers to partner with their own supplement manufacturing facility, ProCaps continues to make it possible for us to reach the women no else is reaching.
On a recent airing of their program on the Home Shopping Network, ProCaps Labs achieved and surpassed a special milestone, the donation of 1,000,000 bottles of prenatal vitamins to Vitamin Angels - a truly remarkable accomplishment. Through their generosity women in need are receiving the essential nutrients they need for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child. Prenatal supplements donated by ProCaps have been delivered to Belize, Cote D’Ivoire, El Salvador, Gaza West Bank, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Peru, Romania, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe and 24 states domestically!
We offer our many thanks to ProCaps Laboratories and all of the other contributors who make these donations possible.

Dear Friends,
With Mother’s day just behind us and the new Lancet report of Maternal health just being released, it seems like an appropriate time to focus on women (mothers in particular) and the incredible opportunity to make a difference in millions of mothers and babies lives.
The good news is that the recent Lancet article confirmed that the maternal mortality rate (MMR) has dropped in the past thirty years by 35%. The challenge is that only 23 countries out of 181 are on track to achieve a 75% reduction in MMR by 2015, a goal agreed to and signed in 2000 by 192 countries as part of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.
Vitamin Angels is committed to supporting increased reductions in MMR’s and child mortality rates through distribution of prenatal vitamins to pregnant and lactating women, and by providing vitamin A for children from 6 months to 5 years old. We hope that the recent Lancet report is a call to action for our supporters and partner organizations to do even more.
Programs to reduce MMR’s and child mortality rates are working and having a measurable impact. Vitamin interventions, programs to improve maternal education and increase skilled birth attendants, and supporting exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age, are all saving the lives of women and babies around the world. It is time to increase our commitment.
As the Lancet editor commented, "Women have long delivered for society, and slowly, society is at last delivering for women. This is a moment to celebrate and accelerate." Well said.
Upwards!
Howard Schiffer, President

The report sparked some media frenzy as news sources from the New York Times to the Washington Post reported the sharp decline in maternal mortality worldwide.

Study finds infections cause 68% of child deaths
Reuters reported on a study published by the Lancet on Wednesday which estimated that more than two thirds of the estimated 8.8 million under-five child deaths were caused by infectious diseases, like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. At least 41% (3.6 million) of deaths in under-fives occurred in newly born babies, or neonates.
The region with most deaths was Africa at 4.2 million, followed by southeast Asia at 2.4 million.
