Howard Schiffer, Vitamin Angels founder/president recently returned from a trip to Australia to kick start Vitamin Angels' promotion with sanofi-aventis and its Nature's Own brand. Check out what Howard had to say about the trip:

"The welcome we received at the Pharmacy Guild's APP Conference in the Gold Coast, Australia, set the tone for my entire trip. Kos Sclavos, the President, personally welcomed me and introduced Vitamin Angels to 1,500 attendees (in a packed amphitheater) at their annual meeting. Kos gave the Pharmacy Guild's stamp of approval to Vitamin Angels and encouraged everyone to get involved with our new partnership with sanofi-aventis and Nature's Own."

Update from "Doctors Giving Back" in Ethiopia
We recently received an update from Doctors Giving Back, our in-field partner working in Ethiopia. Dan Prachar shared about the feeding program in Ethiopia which is serving HIV positive orphans in a squatter's village near Addis Adaba and the village health program set up for women in remote communities near the Sudan border. Together we are connecting 1,000 children with vitamin A and 1,301 women with multivitamins.

Photos from Guatemala
We received new photographs from our in-field partner, People for Guatemala, a subset of Health Ministries Association. Together we are reaching 1,250 children with vitamin A through our Operation 20/20 program and 1,510 children and 118 women with multivitamins. The photos were taken during a recent vitamin distribution by People for Guatemala in a kindergarten classroom.

Hero Nutritional Products LLC

Vitamin Angels would like to give a special thank you to Hero Nutritional Products LLC for their support! Through a recent donation of 205,057 doses of children's multivitamins, we are able to reach thousands of children in need through our
in-country partner Feed the Hungry. The vitamins are being distributed through local churches and ministries and will ensure the children are receiving the vital nutrients they need for good health. Hero Nutritional Products- thank you for your commitment to improving the lives of children around the world!
Orenda International

We are proud to have the support of our partners at Orenda International again this year, who have generously contributed 332,280 tablets of women's All in One Female multivitamins. The vitamins were given to our partner Hope in Action and are being distributed each week along with food and other items in Morganton, North Carolina. They are reaching women like Mary, who works overtime whenever possible, though still doesn't qualify for government assistance. Orenda International is a company focused on empowering others, both in their business model and through their commitment to providing health and nutrition to those in need around the world. Thank you Orenda for your continued support!

Dear Friends,

In 2008, the Copenhagen Business School asked the quintessential 'what-if' question to eight prominent economists: What would you do if given $75 million and the task of creating lasting impact regarding some of the world's greatest challenges, including disease, malnutrition and hunger, sanitation and water, and education? When the votes were tallied, the not-so-startling result was that 5 of the top 10 suggestions involved nutrition, including micronutrient supplementation for children, fortifying salt with zinc and iodine, and breeding high levels of micronutrients into crops (like sweet potatoes high in vitamin A). Considering the question was posed to economists, and their largest consideration is return on investment (ROI), these results make sense. Where else are you going to get the largest results for the smallest investment?

This was my realization when I started Vitamin Angels seventeen years ago. Today, when I speak around the world about the work that Vitamin Angels does, I bring with me a small vial containing about 30 high dose vitamin A capsules. During my talk I hold up this vial and tell people this is enough to reach 15 children for 1 year, and at a cost of less than 25 cents per child per year, with a result of lowering mortality rates by 23%! It still amazes me, even today.

I recently returned from observing vitamin distributions in Nicaragua, and I'm off to Kenya at the end of this month (after the Vitamin Shoppe and Nature's Value Charity Golf Outing on May 23th). What always amazes me when I visit these countries and see the outstanding work our partners are doing, is how enthusiastic they are about the vitamins we are providing. In Nicaragua, our partners are digging artesian wells (the first I have seen in seventeen years of doing this work!), they are assisting people with building new houses (and then selling them back to the people for just the cost of materials, on a 25 year note), building schools, running incredible medical programs with groups of dedicated doctors in very remote villages, processing microloans, awarding scholarships, and the list goes on. And still everyone is excited about vitamins. They know that without them even the finest hospital or the newest school will continue fighting an uphill battle to deliver healthy babies or educate young children. With vitamins so much becomes possible.

Our next event following the Vitamin Shoppe and Nature's Value Charity Golf Outing on May 23th will be our Summit of Angels Reception at the NBJ Summit on July 19th. I will also be sending out Notes from the Field during my trip to Kenya. I want to thank everyone who responds to these updates. When we send out stories and news from the most remote regions around the world, it is heartening to know you are listening!

Upwards! Howard Schiffer, President
