Multivitamins for Cambodian School
Crown Relocations, long time supporter of Vitamin Angels, recently opened a new facility in Phnom Penh. Once the facility was operational, Jim Thompson, Crown Worldwide chairman, and his wife Sally, quickly realized the desperate need for a school in the neighboring village Proa Chum. Determined to help create a safe and secure place where the students could better their chances for the future through education, the school was built in just four month. In an effort to facilitate even greater opportunities for the physical and cognitive development of the children, the Proa Chum School recently began distributing over 400,000 children’s multivitamins provided by Vitamin Angels. |

Vitamin Angels in Uzbekistan
Vitamin Angels is pleased to be partnering with Medical Teams International and the Ministry of Health in Uzbekistan. Recently we provided 100,000 doses of 100,000 IU vitamin A to the project to reach children 12-59 months old, which will complement their existing nationwide supplementation program. All of the children up to one year old will see a general practitioner once a month for a checkup and so that they can be sure to receive the dose of vitamin A so critical to their development. |

JP Morgan and Vitamin Angels
competition. Vitamin Angels easily made it to the second round of presentations and out of 9 groups took 4th place receiving a $500 grant. Group member Jenny Cheng describes in what prompted the group to choose Vitamin Angels:
"We chose Vitamin Angels because unlike other organizations, you did not seek to reinvent the wheel - by connecting high dose capsules of vitamin A (and anti-parasitic medication) to the existing distribution arms of NGOs, you avoided redundant overhead costs. This strategy demonstrated your sense of innovation, emphasis on efficiency, and focus on helping eradicate Vitamin A Deficiency in numerous developing countries throughout the world. We were very inspired and appreciative to have had the opportunity to introduce your cause to the J.P. Morgan community."
Our many thanks to Anthony Eigier, Jenny Cheng and the other members of this fantastic group! |

Dear Friends,
Four years ago when we were planning our first Celebration of Angels event, I thought that if we could just raise $250,000 which would represent a one year operating budget, then we would be set. At the first planning meeting, I remember Anthony Zolezzi (now on our Board of Directors) saying 'That’s not enough!' In that instant, I knew we had to raise over $1 million dollars, so we could reach 4.5 million children. We succeeded, last year went on to reach 7.5 million children last year. This year we will connect essential nutrients with 10 million children. Our commitment for 2010 is to reach over 15 million children!
During my talks, I always say that we are doing this for only one reason; because we can! If we don’t reach these children who will? Vitamin Angels has been focusing on building our internal capacity, we are now in a position to far exceed our current goal - with the right support we now talk about the day when we will exceed reaching 100 million children!
All of this is reason to celebrate which is why you are invited to join us in Boston for our annual Celebration of Angels event. We promise you an evening and an event unlike anything you have been to before.
The heart of our event is just that; this industry has a heart, we are hundreds of companies, manufacturers, executives, and supporters coming together to say these children are worth it; they deserve a chance at a healthy life. I always tell people that I have the best job in the world. I get to relate to everyone at a heart level; the companies who support us, the implementation partners who help us deliver the vitamins to the children, and of course the children and their parents who know we are there so their children can lead a full and healthy life. When we reach a village there is often a celebration -literally, with everyone singing and dancing and letting us know how glad they are that we showed up, that someone cares enough to reach these children.
This year, on September 7th, I celebrated my 60th birthday! I’m still not sure how this happened. I only know that I am having a great time and how thankful I am to get to work with so many wonderful people! Many reasons to celebrate!
Upward,
Howard Schiffer, President

World Health Statistics 2009
Every year the World Health Organization produces a report on the health of world population. The report is a compilation of data and statistics collected from its 193 member states. WHO has just released the report for this year - the World Health Statistics 2009. A look at the report statistics indicates that while there have been improvements in child and maternal health in some regions, much more work is needed in order to reach the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015 (the date the goals were set to be accomplished).

Fixing Global Nutrition Institutions
Last month, the Center for Global Development released a paper entitled "Global Nutrition Institutions: Is there an Appetite for Change." The paper was written by Danielle Kuczynski and Ruth Levin, an internationally recognized expert on global health and health policy.
Levin and Kuczynski’s paper identifies what they believe to be the major institutional weaknesses in global nutrition and offers their recommendations for addressing the problems. Many of the issues they identify lie within the present structure of the global nutrition community. They define the structure as an "ecosystem" - "a loose collection of entities that are focused largely on their survival without an overriding logic or plan behind the division of responsibilities among them." As such, global nutrition institutions often compete, overlap, or leave gaps.

Power to the Peaceful
Saturday, September 12th, Vitamin Angels staff joined the crowd of approximately 65,000 exuberant fans for the 11th Annual Power to the Peaceful festival in Golden Gate Park. The day started with an early morning lightening storm and remained foggy all day, but even the classic SF weather turned out to be a wonderful component of an exciting day. The poor weather delayed Howard’s flight causing him to go on stage late, and as it happened just after the Dalai Lama’s representative Namkha Rinpoche, and before Alanis Morissette. The crowd was in full revelry by the time Howard took the stage sharing our mission and calling for the audience to act. Amongst cheers, Howard asked everyone to take out their phones and text to give a $5 donation to Vitamin Angels and help us reach an additional 20 children. Cell phones were out all day, and a great number of people, including Michael Franti himself!, stopped by the booth to learn more and share their enthusiasm for our work.
Sunday afternoon, Howard took to the stage again; this time as part of the Global Action Forum put on in partnership with CARE. The diverse panel, moderated by Jurriaan Kamp Editor-in-Chief of Ode Magazine discussed the subject of: Fighting Global Hunger: Modernizing Our Approach to Food Security.
Our gratitude to Michael Franti, his management, CARE and everyone who made our participation in PTTP possible! Thanks also to Linda Sparrow for her cheerful assistance throughout the day, and the many amazing photos!!
