Vitamin Angels headed to El Salvador in September to visit the projects implemented by Fusal, the in-country partner of Vitamin Angels’ grantee MAP International. Vitamin Angels’ President and Founder Howard Schiffer was joined by Vitamin Angels’ Office Manager Maureen Boyle, and our resident photographer Matt Dayka. Our group visited projects in the San Salvador area and met with the children benefiting from vitamin A through our Operation 20/20 program.
With a population of approximately 7 million and consisting of only 8,000 square miles, El Salvador is both the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. The prevalence of under-nutrition among Salvadoran children under 5 is 18.9% (WFP 2011). In 2010, The World Health Organization reported that of El Salvadorian children under age 5:
