Content Marketing Manager (Exempt Position)

Role or Purpose of the Position

The Content Marketing Manager (CMM) leads the creation of content. Working closely with the VP of Marketing and the Associate Director of Brand-Marketing, the CMM transforms strategic direction into action, developing concepts, facilitating capture, and managing content creation across the project lifecycle to meet organizational and divisional objectives.

This individual understands the power of great storytelling and what it takes to go from an idea to a finished product. They love to innovate and collaborate to create compelling content that brings the Vitamin Angels (VA) cause to life.

Vitamin Angels holds the collection and use of content to the highest of ethical standards with the consideration that the subjects are real people in real-life settings who deserve accurate representation. The CMM plays a critical role in ensuring these standards are upheld and drives the evolution of standards as needed or appropriate.   


Major Duties and Responsibilities

Content Marketing

  • Establish an always-on content strategy aligned with divisional and organizational goals based on audience insights.
  • Collaborate cross-divisionally to identify and anticipate content needs and build plans to fulfill them.
  • Plan, build, and execute the content calendar.
  • Build actionable strategies that support marketing tactics.
  • Identify storytelling opportunities that elevate the brand, promote visibility, increase credibility, and accurately represent our work, partners, and participants.
  • Research and contribute creative story ideas and formats that support key content goals.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for content needs; field new requests, drive development, edit, and otherwise support fulfillment.

Content Capture

  • Conduct outreach to identify capture opportunities and explore the feasibility of content collection.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with content capture contractors—freelance photographers, videographers, and journalists. Vet, engage, and onboard new contractors as needed—coordinate freelance agreements.
  • Facilitate the successful collection of content by VA staff and external contractors (the content team).
  • Working with the Program team, aggregate and research data unique or relevant to the location, partner, and context.
    • Brief the content team on capture objectives and priorities; define deliverables and timelines; provide interview questions and shots lists and trip briefs and travel guidelines.
    • Train content team on standard operating procedures for ethical capture, including obtaining informed consent and the associated release form process.
    • In partnership with the Digital Content Coordinator, train the content team on asset management protocols, including file back-up, ingestion workflows, naming conventions, etc.
    • Periodically join trips to oversee and evaluate collection processes. Often leads interviews with subjects.
  • Manage content capture budget and tracking.

Content Creation

  • Create engaging content across all formats and channels targeting various audience segments.
  • Manage the content creation lifecycle:
    • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to evaluate available content and identify relevant use cases.
    • Define individual content projects, goals, and objectives; obtain feedback from stakeholders to ensure alignment.
    • In collaboration with the Marketing Operations Coordinator, define timelines, and establish project priorities for creators across multiple ongoing assignments.
    • Develop project briefs and assign projects to content creators, working to ensure an engaging, easy-to-consume, and differentiated product.
    • At times, the CMM will be responsible for copywriting.
    • Lead review process, aggregate and provide feedback, and see projects through to completion.
    • In advance of content release, obtain necessary internal and external reviews for accuracy, fact-checking, and stakeholder approvals, including verification of subject releases.
    • Deliver approved or final content to end-users within the agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Drive internal understanding of available content, including raw, in-development, available, and finished assets.
  • Collect qualitative and quantitative insights to measure performance and apply learnings to subsequent projects in collaboration with channel leads.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with contracted content creators—video producers, copywriters, graphic designers, illustrators, etc. Vet, engage, and onboard new creators as needed—coordinate freelance agreements.

Implement and Evolve Standards & Best Practices

Consistent with VA values and national/international best practices:

  • Ensure ethical and sustainable practices and relations with individuals/groups participating in content collection.
  • Facilitate obtaining the informed consent of subjects.
  • Employ best efforts to ensure program activities, participants, and context are portrayed accurately and respectfully.
  • Drive the evolution of best-in-class standards for ethical capture, representation, and depiction.

Level of Decision Making

Within the bounds of VA's mission, values and policies, and sound professional practices, the Content Marketing Manager has the discretion to use independent judgment to make decisions of significant consequence that affect VA clients, partners, and employees. The Associate Director of Brand Marketing will determine specific authorities associated with this position and its implementation.

Organizational Relationships

VA operates under a collaborative management model. The Content Marketing Manager reports to the Associate Director of Brand Marketing concerning overall assignments and performance and interacts daily with other team members to coordinate their activities. The Content Marketing Manager establishes their daily work priorities but does so with the support and mentorship of the Associate Director of Brand Marketing and the VP of Marketing, and in collaboration with the Marketing Division at large.

Experience & Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, or equivalent experience, in Marketing, Communications, or a related field of study.
  • Strong understanding of brand marketing, storytelling, and what it takes to engage audiences through content.
  • 3-5 years of experience in content marketing, content project management, and/or digital content creation.
  • Proven, current, and relevant track record in creating effective marketing content in a variety of formats. Ability to consistently deliver high-quality, brand- and audience-relevant content on time and budget.
  • At least one year of experience managing creative teams to produce brand-compliant marketing assets.
  • At least one year of experience leading content capture strategy and capture teams through execution.
  • The ability to work well within and across teams and give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and with remote teams.
  • Strong project management skills. Adaptable and capable of managing competing deadlines and maintaining a positive attitude when working under pressure.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Experience with Office and Adobe Suite
  • Ability to manage stress, including but not limited to stress resulting from local and foreign travel, large crowds, open spaces, shared office space, and daily activities.
  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods of time, including but not limited to prolonged air travel, and general job assignments perform at a desk.


Highly desirable:

  • Experience in public health, nutrition, healthcare, nonprofit/NGO, or journalism.
  • Highly empathetic and respectful, and an excellent active listener.  Experience leading interviews a plus.
  • Professional writing experience
  • Experience building and managing budgets
  • Training, interest, or a keen eye for photography
  • Familiarity with using data analytics to measure and improve the impact of content on desired objectives.
  • Knowledge of SEO and digital user-experience design
  • Understanding and awareness of the need for cultural & religious sensitivities and related nuances to protect the integrity and safety of populations that experience marginalization or are underserved.
  • Travel experience in low-resource settings
  • Bi- or multi-lingual

Challenges of the Position

The special challenges for the Content Marketing Manager are multi-fold. Of particular note to the role, is the unique responsibility of overseeing the depiction of program partners and participants. While they are not expected to be an expert, the CMM is charged with implementing and upholding ethical practices for capture, including obtaining informed consent, and ensuring that portrayals are accurate and respectful. At times, the CMM may be required to make judgment calls, even when there isn’t a clear cut answer.

For an organizational perspective, this person must: i) function effectively in an organization under continuing transformation and growth, ii) recognize and thrive in a non-profit organization driven by an unusual primary revenue generation model – cause marketing promotions in association with retail products and Corporate Social Responsibility programs, iii) be comfortable with an organization that seeks to apply, as feasible, market and business oriented solutions to its non-profit work, iv) function within a working environment dependent on self-initiative and collaboration among many team members both internal and external, and v) possess an ability to work effectively/efficiently and thrive in an environment in which many VA team members both internal and external to the Marketing Division are situated in different time zones and accessible only by phone, email, or videoconferencing software.
