Going the Extra Mile: Christine’s Marathon Fundraiser

Christine fundraised for Vitamin Angels while training for the New York City marathon last year, running in support of children and mothers worldwide.

Christine Murray laced up her teal running shoes on November 6, 2016 - the morning of her first NYC Marathon.

Her vibrant blue kicks matched Vitamin Angels’ familiar brand color, and for good reason. Christine wasn’t solely running for herself that day, although she had her personal goals in mind as she stretched before the race. In support of Vitamin Angels, her race also served as a fundraiser.

“Even though I didn’t need to fundraise to get in [to the race], I still wanted to fundraise to help a great cause with Vitamin Angels,” she told us.

Building off of the momentum of her marathon training, Christine promoted her fundraiser to family and friends in the months before she set foot at the starting line. By the time she completed the race, she’d earned $200, enough to provide 20 children with nutritional support during what we call the “critical window,” or first five years of a child’s life.

“I’m more soft spoken and feel bad asking people for money, but I’m glad that I was able to raise some funds,” Christine said. “It was heartwarming and motivating to see my friends and family supporting something that was important to me.”

“As I was training for the marathon, I really saw the impact that nutrition has on the body ... That malnutrition is the #1 cause of preventable child mortality really is such an incredible injustice.” Christine Murray

Ready to hit the pavement!

One of Christine's colleagues from The Vitamin Shoppe made a sign to show her support at the race.

Christine’s connection to Vitamin Angels blossomed out of her role as Brand Communications Manager at The Vitamin Shoppe, which is one of our largest corporate partners. For the past decade, The Vitamin Shoppe has advocated for Vitamin Angels through in-store customer-facing campaigns, vendor promotions, charity golf outings and other initiatives.

“Since joining The Vitamin Shoppe about a year ago, I’ve learned a lot about Vitamin Angels through the campaigns. And as I was training for the marathon, I really saw the impact that nutrition has on the body,” she said, referring to her reason for fundraising for Vitamin Angels over another nonprofit. “It's made me feel very fortunate to live where I live and to have access to the vitamins and supplements that I need…knowing that malnutrition is the #1 cause of preventable child mortality really is such an incredible injustice.”

Through her fundraiser, Christine helped spread awareness about our work while helping to alleviate the burden of childhood malnutrition for 20 children worldwide – a notable feat on its own! And, of course, she completed a marathon.

“Since I understand how fundraising works now, I’d definitely try to advocate more to raise even more funds [in the future],” she noted. “Every bit helps, and you’d be surprised to see who in your life would be willing to help support something that matters to you."
